The 5 Dos and Don’ts of Twitter
Social media is a great new way to get your bed and breakfast noticed online. If you’re trying out twitter for the first time, here are our top tips for keeping it simple and focused.

The 5 Dos
1. Do keep people updated
Make sure you keep your followers updated on what is happening at your bed and breakfast or hotel. New rooms, happy guests and latest PR features and photographs are all great to share with the people interested in following you.
2. Do make and effort to build relationships
Spend time getting to know others in your industry. They may be interested in what you offer, and also be able to offer you something useful in return. You can find a lot of people posting useful information on twitter, but its worth spending some time to find them.
3. Do create content and share it
Create useful content on your website or on your blog. Share this on twitter which will get people going to your website. This is a great way to keep people coming back and getting to know you better. Sharing content that gets linked to or shared also helps you get discovered in search engines.
4. Do share selective special offers
Share special offers with your followers that they wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else. This means that the people who are the most loyal towards you will find out about your offers first. If people know that they are likely to only get these offers through twitter, they may be more likely to follow you.
5. Do track your links
To see what content you post gets the best response, create and track your links using Bit.ly. Bit.ly allows you to create links and track which links you shared were the most popular.
The 5 Don’ts
1. Don’t oversell
People who follow you on twitter may not just be interested in deals. While some people are looking for discounts and special offers don’t overwhelm them every day with a new deal. People will get used to them and they’ll lose their perceived value. Keep deals selective and special.
2. Don’t get personal
If someone upsets you it is never a good idea to share it on twitter. Your twitter account reflects your brand so you should keep it professional and light-hearted. You can actually end up hurting your own reputation.
3. Don’t expect followers to find you
If you want to increase your number of followers you need to go out and find them. Retweeting their content or mentioning them is a great way to get started. Add your Twitter account to your website, so that people coming to your website can find you on twitter too.
4. Don’t leave your account hanging
Don’t tweet for a few days and give up. Make sure you commit to at least 10 minutes to twitter every day. If you know you are going to be away, connect twitter up to your smart phone or schedule some tweets using free software like Hootsuite or Tweetdeck to save you time.
5. Don’t forget to make it a conversation
It is easy to get lost in updating twitter, but spend time retweeting and sharing other peoples’ content, news and tweets. This helps you build relationships. Don’t forget to say thank you when someone retweets or shares your news too.
