Southampton's historic roots run deep, spanning the Roman and Saxon eras. It became a walled city in the medieval era, and little traces of each historic age remain for visitors to explore. The city's Roman ruins are situated in the suburb of Bitterne Manor and the remains of the medieval wall are located in the Old Town.
